“Let’s Talk Race” emerged at the Richland (SC) Public Library as a response to the tragic events of 2015, including the murders of Walter Scott and the Charleston Emmanuel AME Church shooting. In the wake of these incidents, South Carolinians faced a mix of emotions—anger, confusion, and fear. Seeking ways to heal, the library took a proactive approach, launching small dialogue circles that offered a safe space for conversations about race. Since then, RPL has orchestrated over 250 events and community discussions, engaging more than 4,000 participants. The impact of these conversations rippled beyond the library’s confines, prompting the creation of a free curriculum intended for use by libraries and groups across the nation.

In this episode, our guests are Tamara King, Chief Equity and Engagement Officer, and Heather McCue, Children’s and Teens Services Manager at Richland Public Library. We’ll look at the roots and expansion of “Let’s Talk Race,” delve into the transformative influence of dialogue, its capacity to ignite change, nurture empathy, and foster unity within communities, and share how libraries can join this important initiative.

In this episode we discuss the Cultural Proficiencies for Racial Equity Framework, which was approved by the boards of directors of the four partner organizations, the American Library Association (ALA), Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and Public Library Association (PLA), during summer of 2022. Our guests for this episode are Christina Fuller Gregory, Assistant Director of Libraries South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities and Kristin Lahurd, Deputy Director, Conference Content and Engagement. American Library Association.

From the Introduction to the Cultural Proficiencies for Racial Equity Framework document:

This framework has been developed as a tool both theoretical and practical in its orientation, as a guide for developing personal, organizational, institutional, and systems-level knowledge and understanding of the nature of racism and its many manifestations. Racism results in differential, inequitable, and devastating impacts on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in the library and information science (LIS) sector, the communities libraries serve, and beyond. The framework is not intended to be liberatory practice in itself,–an instrument or agent that will abolish racial inequity or a step-by-step guide–but, rather to provide the grounding needed to effect change in thinking, behavior, and practice that will lead to better outcomes for racialized and minoritized populations.

Editor’s Note: This podcast is based on a presentation that was scheduled to occur at the 2022 PLA Conference. Unfortunately, the presentation was canceled and will not/did not take place. However, the podcast episode still offers a ton of information on library anti-hate statements.

In this episode we talk with Cindy Khatri, Public Relations Manager, and Van McGary, Adult and Teen Services Assistant Manager, at the Downers Grove (IL) Public Library (DGPL) about the Anti-Hate Statements that the library releases in response to current events. The library believes that through the use of Anti-Hate Statements they are openly condemning hate and violence against historically marginalized groups. So Far, DGPL has released the following Anti-Hate Statements:

12/20/2021: From the Board of Library Trustees and Director: A Statement in Solidarity of the LGBTQ+ Community
6/10/2021: From the Board of Library Trustees and Director: A Message Against Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia
4/16/2021: From the Director: An Updated Message in Support of Black and Brown Lives
3/24/2021: From the Board of Library Trustees: A Message on Anti-Asian Racism
6/2/2020: From the Director: A Message on Anti-Racism and Free Speech
You can see the statements and read more about the library’s EDISJ efforts at dglibrary.org/edi/. Khatri and McGary will also present a program at the upcoming PLA conference (PLA 2022) on this topic. More info at www.placonference.org.

How often do you catch yourself feeling like you are in ‘over your head’ at work? Imposter syndrome – the sense that you are inadequate for the task in front of you despite past proof of your ability – can wreak havoc on your career and keep you from taking on new challenges. It can also prevent you from sharing your unique talents and skills in ways that benefit you and your organization. But imposter syndrome need not derail your career. Those feelings of being a “fraud” can be turned into a springboard to propel you forward in your career and in your life. Join Public Libraries magazine editor, Kathleen Hughes and Youth Services Librarian Erin Collier Plummer, Seminole County (FL) Public Library, in a discussion of this phenomenon.
